Open-source maintainer receives a fix, a thank-you, and a shortbread recipe.
The bug report included steps to reproduce the problem, a small patch, and a note saying how much the software had helped a local theatre. Below that was a recipe for shortbread, marked “optional dependency.” Maintainer Ellis merged the fix before the kettle boiled and tried the recipe that evening. A discussion about salted butter has now attracted more participants than the original issue. For once, everyone involved describes this as a good outcome. The next release is provisionally named Crumb.
